Pokhara

Gateway to the Annapurnas

Pokhara

Nepal

Overview

Pokhara is Nepal's adventure capital and the perfect counterpoint to Kathmandu's intensity. Nestled beside the tranquil Phewa Lake with the Annapurna massif as its backdrop, the city offers a laid-back lakeside vibe, world-class paragliding, and serves as the starting point for some of the world's best treks. Whether you spend your days boating on the lake, watching sunrise over Sarangkot, or preparing for a trek into the mountains, Pokhara's natural beauty makes every moment memorable.

Top Attractions

Phewa Lake

The second-largest lake in Nepal, reflecting the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks on clear mornings. Rent a colorful rowing boat and visit the Tal Barahi Temple on its island.

Sarangkot Sunrise

A hilltop viewpoint at 1,600m offering arguably the best mountain sunrise in Nepal. Watch the Annapurna range turn gold at dawn, then try paragliding from the same ridge.

Paragliding

Tandem paragliding flights from Sarangkot offer 20-30 minutes of soaring above the lake with Himalayan panoramas. One of the top paragliding destinations in the world.

World Peace Pagoda

A gleaming white stupa on a ridge south of the lake, reachable by a scenic hike or boat-and-climb combination. Offers sweeping views of both the lake and the mountains.

Davis Falls & Gupteshwor Cave

A waterfall that plunges into a deep gorge and an adjacent cave with sacred Hindu shrines inside. Best visited during or just after monsoon when the water flow is dramatic.

Best Time to Visit

October to November provides crystal-clear mountain views and comfortable trekking weather. March to April offers warm days and rhododendron blooms along trek routes. December to February is cool but scenic. Paragliding operates year-round except during heavy monsoon (July-August).

How to Get There

Pokhara Airport receives domestic flights from Kathmandu (25 minutes). Tourist buses from Kathmandu take 6-7 hours along the Prithvi Highway. Luxury coaches and microbuses depart daily from Kathmandu's Sorakhutte and Kalanki bus stands.
